What you can do to help Save the Lakes:

Make yourself visible. Put up a yard sign to show your support for our educational efforts. Add a bumper sticker to your car (or bicycle!). Volunteer to hand out flyers or staff an information table at local events. Call Mourka at 658-7102 to see what opportunities are available or to obtain materials.

Attend meetings of the Town Board and, when the agenda warrants, other Town agencies. Report your observations to us so we can keep track of actions taken by Town agencies and add them to the Time Line.

Assist at fund-raising events. Regrettably, money talks. HRVR has it; we don't.

Talk to your Town, County, State , and Federal officials. Ask them how they perceive the project and why. Make sure they know how you perceive it and why.

Write a letter to a local newspaper or magazine, or participate in a call-in radio show to help us educate the public.

Spread the word to your friends and neighbors. You can download and share these informative documents:
Williams Lake Property: Bountiful Natural and Cultural Resources
"Green" overdevelopment poses a new challenge in Ulster County.

When the DEIS is released, attend the public comment meetings that will follow. Pick a section of the document and read it over, then write up your comments for us to publicize.

Zoning    The Town of Rosendale is currently in the process of reviewing, clarifying and strengthening all aspects of its zoning law, including methods to handle large-scale projects along the lines of the proposed development. Community input and support of the process is encouraged, and it is crucial to its success. Familiarize yourself with the issues, and get involved. Let the Rosendale Town Board know that re-zoning of the Binnewater Lakes should reflect the value of the land as recreational open space - NOT as a private housing development.

Oh, and have we mentioned, you could send us some money. STL is an all-volunteer organization, but professional advice isn't cheap and we aren't experts in hydrology, Indiana bats, PILOT programs, tax treatment of condominium associations, karst, or SEQRA law.

We at Save the Lakes firmly believe that this gated community/real-estate "resort" plan is an example of inappropriate overdevelopment. Community character, the health of the local economy at the grassroots level, water resources and the environment will all be adversely impacted.

When the Draft Environmental Impact Statement is completed, expert studies and legal advice will be called upon.
This is the kind of project that has torn apart rural communities across the country.

Short-term gain for the few must be weighed against the long-term negative impacts that everyone will experience.

Please contribute. Help our locale from being dominated by profit-driven outside investment interests. We are fighting to keep our natural resources for the community to nurture and enjoy.
